PictureI can see daylight under both feet!
First, before I begin my review, can we talk about the awesomeness that is this picture? It's the VERY FIRST running picture I have with both feet OFF THE GROUND! I'm pretty sure it was because the tights had my legs feeling so good!
OK, now on with our regularly scheduled blogging.

Disclaimer:
I received a pair of 2XU Compression tights thanks to Bibrave's BibRavePro ambassadorship. You can learn more about becoming a BibRave Pro & check out BibRave.com to find and write race reviews. As always, all opinions, typos, and silly pictures are my own.

Thanks to Angie's review, I figured out I was saying 2XU wrong. I was saying 2-X-U.
But really, the proper way to say it is, 2 Times You! Clever.

Feel

Picture
I don't want to spend a lot of time telling you about the technology that is in these compression tights. The website can do that for me. I want to tell you about how I felt when I first put these on.
A few weeks ago, here in Oklahoma, we finally had a cool enough Saturday that I could wear these on a run and from the moment I put them on, my legs just felt good. They hugged my legs in a nice and supportive way and when I first put them on my legs instantly felt an improvement in circulation. It's hard to explain that first feeling. My legs just felt alive and ready to hit the path. Clearly they were because I had my first ever both-feet-off-the-ground at the same time pic!
I will say, that like any compression wear, getting these babies on for the first time took a little work. But hey, that's more calories burned right? ::Insert winky smiley face here::

I also wore these during the Tulsa Run yesterday for my longest run in them, 9.3 miles.
Typically after a race I have the dreaded leg pain about 10 minutes after I stop running. It feels like all the blood in my body is trying to drain down into my feet and it's awful. I noticed a vast improvement in the feeling while wearing these after the race! Any product that can reduce the pain of a hard race has me hooked!

Fit/Sizing

Picture
One difficult part about ordering any type of running gear online is that you never know how sizing works. That being said, I definitely wanted to include my sizing experience in the blog. 1. Because I agonized over what size to order for at least 15 minutes and 2. I know I'm not the only one who does that. Right? Please tell me I'm not alone? KThanks!

The sizing chart found on the website is pretty true to fit in my opinion. It's a typical find your height and find your weight and see what size that you land in. If you land in a small, order a small, if you land just barely in the medium, order the medium.  I was borderline between sizes. Ugh! Agony ensued. (Not kidding) But I went with where my current height/weight combo landed me and I am really happy with the fit.

Hi Running Buddies!

How is your training going? My next race is just under a month away and I have two more long runs left with my running group. But this isn't a training recap blog, this is a review of a new product I've been testing over the last couple weeks, Zensah Ultra Compression Leg Sleeves.

Disclaimer: I received a pair of Zensah Ultra Compression Sleeves thanks to Bibrave's BibRavePro ambassadorship. You can learn more about becoming a BibRave Pro & check out BibRave.com to find and write race reviews. As always, all opinions, typos, and silly pictures are my own.

Picture
If you look at this picture really close, (but please don't) you can see that I have two bruised big toe nails. Gross! That is what happens to me when a race is hot and humid and my feet swell a bunch.

This tells me 2 things.
1. Running is hard
2. My feet swell

In the past when I've worn compression socks or sleeves, I've had a love/hate relationship with them. I need them but they don't make my legs feel great. My legs feel tired when wearing them. So when I got news that I would be able to try Zensah, a brand of compression socks/sleeves I hadn't tried before, I was happy to give compression another shot.

According to the Zensah website, "Zensah Ultra Compression Leg Sleeves give athletes a tighter fit in the calves and shins to increase performance and decrease muscle recovery time by stimulating blood flow while stabilizing the muscles to help prevent injury."

If you are a runner who prefers tight compression, then these are the sleeves for you! Some people need that tight support and I feel this is definitely one of the tighter compression sleeves I've tried.

I ended up trying these on several runs. A Monday night 6 mile recovery run, a 9 mile base pace run, a 13 mile race pace run, and my last run was a 17 mile run where I put them on at mile 8.  Yes, I sat down in the middle of my run, took my shoes off, and put these on. It's all for science and the love of testing out products!

I ordered a medium in the sleeves based off of my calf size. After testing these out, I feel like I got the right size and the best practice for me is to go by calf size and not necessarily my height. I also feel like I may be a person that needs a lighter compression.

What I Learned

I actually learned a lot trying these out.

I learned that I prefer tight compression sleeves for recovery.
I learned that putting compression sleeves on half way through my run is better than starting out with them on for me.
I learned from one of my fellow BibRavePros that it can take a few weeks of consistent wearing of compression for your legs to become fully acclimated to them. Who knew!?
I learned that not everyone loves compression for running, but compression for recovery is key!
I learned that not all compression socks/sleeves are created equal and if I wasn't loving these, that I may be a better candidate for the regular compression socks.
I learned that Zensah has some CUTE argyle socks!

What Did Other BibRavePros Think?

Question! Socks or Sleeves?

Picture
Hi Running Buddies!

How was your weekend? I hope you got your miles in if you are training for a Spring race!
I'm right in the middle of my 16 week training cycle for my next marathon. After this race, I think I'll retire from the full marathon for a while and stick with half marathons and working on my 5k time. But that is a totally different blog for another day. Today, I'm going to tell you all about a new product I got to try, MESTRENGTH.

Disclaimer: I received a box of MESTRENGTH thanks to Bibrave's BibRavePro ambassadorship. You can learn more about becoming a BibRave Pro & check out BibRave.com to find and write race reviews. As always, all opinions, typos, and silly pictures are my own.

What is it?

Picture
MESTRENGTH is a performance hydration mix that includes electrolytes for hydration and creatine for muscle recovery. I know what you are thinking. Creatine? The stuff teenage boys buy in bulk to get bigger/stronger for whatever sport they are into? Yup, creatine. It hast just enough in it to aid in muscle recovery, not make you bulk up.
You can use this as a pre-workout as well. I've been using it post-long-run and the biggest thing I've noticed is that I don't get a headache like I normally do if I am just drinking water.
Important info to note:
  • Zero Sugar
  • Zero Carbs
  • Zero Calories

I don't know if I have fellow insulin resistant, PCOS, or maybe even diabetic runners that read this blog, but I always get excited to try a new product when I find out it is not packed with sugar. So for that, this product gets an extra Ginger brownie point* from me.
Plus! I'm pretty sure drinking your recovery drink out of an adult sippy cup gives you +5 cool points on the internets!
It is pretty handy that they come in individual serving packets and you just mix it in a water bottle and go.
*Ginger Brownie Points cannot be traded in for gingers or brownies. Sorry.

How does it taste?

Picture
MESTRENGTH has 5 different flavors to chose from. Grape, Strawberry-Kiwi, Orange, Lemon-Lime, and Fruit Punch. My favorite is Lemon-Lime.
It reminds me of lemonade I used to make as a kid. A little tangy and not too sweet.
I will say that some of the flavors are an acquired taste/a little tart (grape). I have a MAJOR sweet tooth so I tend to prefer my drinks to be on the sweeter side. So take that into consideration when I say these aren't on the sweet side. If you are a person who can't drink other sports drinks because they are to surgary or too sweet during a run, I highly recommend you give this a try. Or if you are trying to eat/train "clean" this might be a good alternative to other sports drinks out there. My tummy handled it perfectly fine as well. No issues there.
Also, I do all my long runs on Saturday and then sometime on Sunday it hits me that I can't drink enough water. When I drink this mix after my long run on Saturdays, I don't have that crazy parched feeling on Sunday.

You can shop on Amazon.com and use code: BIBRVE25 and save 25% off until 2/28/2015.

The price for a box of 10 is $14.99 +shipping. That works out to be about the same price as some sports drinks or less.

What do the other BibRavePros think about it?

Question! How do you recover from a long run?

PictureSpeed Work + August Heat = 1 Tired Ginger!
Hi Running Buddies!

How has your summer been? Or really, where did the summer go? It's hard to believe that it's already mid August and I'm already starting week 7 of my marathon training program today. It's been a while since I've posted a training update and last week was a really good week so I wanted to share it with you.

Monday - 30 Minute Boot Camp Class + 5 Mile Run
Tuesday - 30 Minute Boot Camp Class + 4 Mile Run
Wednesday - 30 Minute Boot Camp Class
Thursday - 3.5 Mile Run - Hills
Friday - Rest Day
Saturday - 12.3 Mile Run @Base Pace
Sunday - Rest Day

Summary: I ran about 25 miles and was able to cross train 3 times last week and have 2 full rest days. You all know how I feel about rest days! :) If you don't, you can read it here.

Goals for this week: Be better about foam rolling and trigger point ball massage/rolling for my feet, calf muscles, as well as my IT band and start breaking in my next pair of running shoes.
I'm really focusing hard on not going back to the chiropractor unless I just absolutely have to!
I'd rather save my cash to spend when we are in Hawaii for the Honolulu Marathon!

Thanks to my pals at Bibrave.com you can save some cash (save 15%) on an entry fee to the Honolulu Marathon to by using this code: Bibrave15
I just added 4 more discount codes on my discount page on my blog, check it out!

Question! How many days a week do your cross train? How many days a week do you run?

You may have noticed a few weeks ago that a new badge showed up on my blog sidebar. Well now it's time to let you all in on my next big announcement! I decided to become an ENERGYbits Ambassador!

In June, I wrote an open and honest review of ENERGYbits. It's a review that has been several months in the making and probably the most honest and detailed review I've ever written. The review I wrote got a pretty big and positive response so that is when I new it was time to join the team! Everyone seems so curious about these little green tablets.
Over the past year I've interacted with ENERGYbits on Twitter and not only grew fond of their product, but the people behind the company as well. They are always so positive and encouraging, it's hard not to like them!

Here's What's in it For You

Picture
The best part about being an ENERGYbits Ambassador is that I get to save other people money. Everyone knows that running can be expensive! Race fees, new shoes, nutrition, gear, and traveling, all that adds up. Being an ENERGYbits Ambassador means I'm eligible to have and share a discount code with everyone. That just means it's more cash you can spend on your next race entry fee.  You're Welcome!
But really, if I can help you save money on a product that has been so beneficial to me and helped me see so many new PRs over the last year, I'm all for it. Just let me know when you get your first PR while using your bits!! ::Insert Winky Face Emoticon Here::

Just for clarity's sake, I don't make money from being part of their ambassador program. I save money on their products and you save money on their products so it's a win-win all the way around. Also when people reach out to me and ask what nutrition I love, I'll have some good info to share with them as well.

You can save 30% off of ENERGYbits with my code: RGR30

Below I've included most my (updated) review on ENERGYbits so you can read in-depth as to why I love them so much.

RunGingerRun's Review of ENERGYbits

What are they and how do you take ENERGYbits?
I take a single serving of bits before all my longs runs. I swallow 30 bits (one serving) about 15 minutes prior to the start of my run. ENERGYbits are food in tablet form made from 100% organically grown, Non GMO spirulina algae and have 40 nutrients. Each tablet is only 1 calorie but has a high protein content (64%) in each tablet. You take 30 at a time for energy the same way you would eat a handful of almonds or nuts for energy and not just one at a time.

Do they work?
For me, yes! Last fall when I finished my juice fast I needed race day nutrition that wasn't loaded with carbs and sugars. I remembered trying my sample of ENERGYbits and wanted to give them another shot. I bought an entire bag (1000 tablets) in August and started using them right away. I was very impressed that even though I was eating a low carb diet, I didn't crash on my long runs like I always did in the past. I just felt like I could keep going and better yet, I could keep going at the pace that I started out instead of slowing down or hitting the wall.

I also noticed that when I was done running I wasn't starving or craving sugar! It was such a nice change for me! Also I didn't get that blood sugar spike and then crash because they are mostly protein, which is what I need.

Since I started taking ENERGYbits I was able to PR in every distance I ran over the last 9 months. I PR'd twice in the Half Marathon, PR'd twice in the 15K, PR'd once in the 5K, and PR'd once in the 10K.

The Hubbo has even taken them before a few races as well and managed to take several minutes off his half marathon PR for his first sub 2 hour half!

Since last fall, I've purchased 2 full bags of 1000 bits. Since I only use them for my long runs, races, or when I haven't been able to eat much before a run, they have lasted me a long time. Some people take them for every run, you can do that too or just the long ones. Totally up to you.

Where do I Buy ENERGYbits?
You can buy them online here. Since you get 1000 tabs and you only take 30 at a time, you are really buying your nutrition in bulk. They will ship them right to your door and then you just pop them in the refrigerator for safe keeping.
Be sure to save money and use my discount code: RGR30

Are they hard on your stomach?
Not for me. Because they are made from a super food, spirulina algae, and not sugar, carbs, gluten, chemicals, or caffeine, I haven't had any tummy issues using them.

Not Ready To Buy A Full Bag?
I totally understand that. I have samples for sale.
Each sample bag has 30 bits, or 1 serving, and will only cost $3 plus shipping. (Only in the lower 48 of the US) To buy some sample bits just send me an email to Sarah@RunGingerRunBlog.com and tell me how many you want and I'll send you my PayPal information.
Or you can fill out my contact form on the upper right side of my blog. Or just click here.

Question! What is your go-to race day nutrition plan?

Picture
In some of my previous blog posts, I've shared with you that I have PCOS (Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome). I don't talk about it a lot but it's really not a secret. It's just not fun to blog about. In the past, I have whined and complained about how hard it is to be a distance runner with insulin resistance thanks to PCOS. Runners like carbs, right? Well not if you are insulin resistant. Carbs actually have the opposite effect. Too many carbs and my blood sugar will spike and then crash and burn! Not fun during a marathon. Not fun at all!
I've also complained about my struggle with my weight and how marathon training had actually lead to some weight gain. I know I'm not the only one who has struggled with maintaining weight while marathon training thanks to being rungry and all. But still, PCOS makes running more difficult, and here's why:

1: Due to carb sensitivity, we store carbs as fat which makes it VERY difficult to lose weight
2. Carbs spike my insulin levels which make me nauseated (Also not fun at mile 22 of a marathon)
3.  After a spike in my insulin, since I don't regulate my insulin well on my own, I crash and I crash hard!
4. When you are crashing from low blood sugar you crave sugar. So after a long run when you are rungry, you want all the bad things like muffins, cookies, ice cream, and the list goes on and on. Seriously, ask any lady with PCOS if she craves sugar like a crack fiend and she will tell you the answer is, YES!!
5. The usual energy gels or chomps that most people take are made up of mostly carbs/sugar. Those don't work for me for the reasons listed above.

BUT! What I haven't shared with you yet is that last fall I finally found my race day nutrition of choice and it works perfect for me! I was first introduced to ENERGYbits via Twitter but didn't give them much thought until they showed up in one of my StrideBox shipments. I received a single serving of these strange little tablets in a small black baggy. I opened them up and chewed one up to see how it tasted. Worst! Idea! Ever! It's perfectly fine to chew them because they are real food, they just taste very green. I highly recommend that you please read the directions. If I had read the directions it says to swallow them with water. Lesson learned.

Question! What do you use for race day nutrition?

PictureVentura Marathon Discount Code 2014
This Ginger Kid is really excited to share an update with you!
The Hubbo and I have added a fun race to our race calendar for the fall and we'll be running the Ventura Half Marathon in September!
This is also good news for you as well!  You are probably wondering how me adding a race to my calendar is good for you, right?

Well do you remember my recent blog post where I told you all I am Going Pro? I recently became a BibRavePro which is an Ambassador for Bibrave.com. They have partnered up with the Ventura Marathon and I'll be out there this fall running the half.

Here's where the good news for you comes in. The good people at Bibrave and the Ventura Marathon were kind enough to provide me with a discount code to save you all some cash. If you use the code: BibRave10 you'll save $10 off a race entry fee. We all know that running a lot of races can add up quickly so every penny saved is a penny you can apply to your next race! :)

The prices are currently:
Marathon: $100
Half Marathon $70
The prices go up on May 1st so be sure to sign up soon to save the most cash.

Also - I know it's still a few months away but I'd love to meet up with my Blog/Twitter/Instagram/Facebook buddies! Will you be there?

Maybe I can organize an informal meet up? Let me know if you are interested!

Why I Picked The Ventura Half Marathon

  • The website says the course if flat-ish and made for PRs.
  • The medal looks cool from last year. (Y'all know I love my medals!)
  • The Hubbo hasn't ran a race in California yet.
  • There's an after party at the beach! Boom! Sold!
  • The End.

Question! What elements make you pick a race? Medal? Course? New State?

I hope everyone had a Merry Christmas!
The last few days for me have been spent opening packages, spending time with family, playing games, and watching A Christmas Story about 7 times. When the Hubbo and I got home from traveling to see my parents and his parents, I was excited to see a bright orange package waiting on me. It was my December Bestowed Box. Because really, can you open too many boxes with surprises in them in one day? Nope!

This month, I teamed up with Bestowed to do a product review. Bestowed is a monthly box subscription service focused on bringing healthy food, snacks, and beverages right to your door. You all know how much I love my other box subscriptions (Stridebox and Birchbox) so this was an easy choice for me to do a product review, plus there's a gift for you too. But seriously, who doesn't like to get mail that is actually fun? Every time a box comes to your door it's a fun surprise to see what is in it. All these items are focused on being healthy and yummy so I don't feel so guilty about it.

Picture
Let's get right to the gift for you all, shall we? For your first Bestowed box, you can save almost 50% if you use the discount code HELLOYUM40. Your first box will cost $10 instead of the normal $19.

You can also send a box as a gift if you had that awkward situation of someone buying you a Christmas gift and you didn't have one for them in return. Oops! That's weird! I just fixed that problem for you. You're welcome!

Picture
So are you wondering what was in this months box? Look to the left.
All this.
  • I Heart Keenwah Ginger Peanut Clusters
  • KIND Snack Dark Chocolate Chili Almond Bar
  • Pacific Natural Foods Simply Stock
  • Saffron Road Food Thai Red Curry Simmer Sauce
  • Simply Organic’s Mediterranean Herb Greek Yogurt
  • Snikiddy Baked Cheddar Cheese Fries

Picture
The KIND Dark Chocolate Chili Almond bar was way different than I was expecting. It was more spicy than sweet. I do really like KIND bars and have been known to pick them up from time to time. They make healthy and yummy snacks that you can find almost anywhere it seems.

The I Heart Keenwah Ginger Peanut snacks were my second favorite item in the box. They are small squares so they are perfect for snacking, they have a nice crunch to them which I like, and the flavor is actually pretty light. I was afraid the Ginger would be super strong, but it's actually not bad at all. In fact, you notice the ginger more as an after taste which is kind of nice and refreshing because it is not overpowering.
The I Heart Keenwah snacks are gluten free and 130 calories per serving. You can find the snacks at Iheartkeenwah.com.

Picture
The Baked Cheddar Fries are my favorite item in the box. They have a nice crunch that you want when you eat chips, they have a good cheesy flavor, but they are healthier than regular fries or chips. They are only 130 calories per bag, Non-GMO, and made with real cheddar. You can find these Kroger, Walmart, The Fresh Market, and Whole Foods.

Not gonna lie, The Thai Red Curry Simmer Sauce made me super nervous when I opened the box.

1. I don't cook.
2. I don't like spicy food and the label says HOT!
3. I'm a picky eater.
4. I don't cook.

But I decided to be extra brave for you all, my blog buddies, and actually made a dish to give this a whirl. Surprisingly, it turned out not bad! The Hubbo liked it so that made me feel even better about my experiment. If you like a little heat to your meal, you would probably like this. I'm not a huge fan of spicy dishes and my eyes watered a little and my nose got a little runny because I'm a spicy food weenie!

Also I used the organic Simply Stock Chicken broth to make the rice for my experimental dish and it was really good on its own. I wish I had set aside some plain rice because it was so good!

This is the dish I made. Mainly because we had all of these ingredients in the house and I didn't have to go to the store. This picture was taken after all the ingredients were cooked but then I mixed them all together like the fancy chef that I am. Ha!

Ingredients:
  • White Rice - 2 Cups
  • Small Shrimp - 1 Bag
  • Cauliflower and Broccoli - 3 Cups
  • Salt - 1 tsp
  • Thai Red Curry Simmer Sauce - 1 Bag
  • Simply Stock Chicken Broth - 1 Box

Do you need or want some new compression socks? They can get kind of expensive and if you want to collect a few different colors that can really add up quick! Here at RunGingerRunBlog we love a good deal on running gear! Luckily one of my favorite readers, Debbie, passed on this great deal on Pro Compression Socks.

You can get 40% off a pair which usually runs $50. So if my math is correct, you pay $30. That sounds like a good deal to me, so I sent the Hubbo a link today and gave him a hint for my Valentine's Day Gift. He wasn't as excited as I was.

Here's the deal. Click here to go directly to their website to order. You also can get Free Shipping. It looks like the website says to allow for 2 weeks for delivery.  Discount ends on February 18th.

Here are more details about the socks.

All Marathon Socks feature:
• Compression technology to help improve blood flow
• Non-slip design
• A blend of materials for comfort & support
• Moisture Control

I have a pair of lime green and now I'm about to order a black pair.
